Reading a bank statement

A monthly statement is the clearest record of your money. Here is how to read one.

The summary box

Most statements begin with the opening balance, total deposits, total withdrawals and the closing balance for the period.

The transaction list

Each line shows a date, a description and an amount. Card purchases, transfers and checks may use short codes.

Common codes

  • POS: a point-of-sale card purchase.
  • ACH: an electronic transfer such as direct deposit or a bill payment.
  • ATM: a cash machine withdrawal.

If something looks wrong

Contact your bank directly using the phone number on its official website or the back of your card.

Keep the paperwork as tidy as the car.
